History of the Bull Terrier

The purebreed white Bull Terrier is descended from a cross between the Bulldog and the Terrier and was originally known as the Bull-and-Terrier.

The terrier admixture was from a large, smooth, black-and-tan terrier or any terrier which showed gameness and a nose for rats.

These dogs were not bred for appearance characteristics, but purely for fighting ability and were often mongrel in appearance, exhibiting chaos in color lines and distinct ugliness of features.

They were quite effective, as the combined the courage and stamina of the Bulldog with the intelligence and quickness of the terrier.

The Bull-and-Terrier was an unlovely dog, having a short, thick head, blunt muzzle, thick-set body, and bow legs. In the early 1850s,

Mr. James Hinks of Birmingham, England, revolutionized the breed by crossing the Bull-and-Terrier with the White English Terrier.  

After years of experimentation, he introduced an entirely new animal to a skeptical and astonished dog community in England, an immaculate white-coated Bull-and-Terrier, smaller and more elegant, to which Mr Hinks gave the new name of Bull Terrier.
